This Week’s Availability

This week we will have:

  • Greens: baby lettuce, pea shoots, arugula, bok choi, green curly kale, lacinato kale, rainbow chard, frilly head lettuce, mini romaine, green cabbage

  • Roots: fresh beet bunches with greens, fresh carrot bunches, rutabaga, salad turnips

  • Alliums: garlic scapes, fresh onions, scallions

  • Herbs: parsley, basil

  • Miscellaneous: Rhubarb, broccolini

  • Fruiting crops: sugar snap peas, slicing cucumbers, pickling cucumbers, Japanese slicing cucumbers, green zucchini, yellow summer squash

Farm News

This time of year we participate in the Vermont Farmers’ Food Center’s Farmacy program that provides fresh weekly veggies for folks based on health and financial needs. This program coordinates several vegetable and fruit growers to grow different crops that get aggregated together into a weekly distribution. It’s a neat opportunity for our farm to grow more of the crops that we are good at growing: in the past few weeks we’ve sent off 250 arugula bags, baby lettuce bags, beet bunches, and pea shoots. We are so supportive of programs like this, that provide opportunities for local farms to grow more food while making that healthy food accessible to more people in our community. It reminds me of a saying from Lakeview Organic Grain, a grain farm from the finger lakes region of New York State from whom we source our cover crop seed: “we all do better when we all do better.”

We have officially begun the big harvest season, harvesting all of our overwintered onions and setting them in the propagation house with fans to dry down the tops. This was our first year growing a large amount of overwintered onions and we are happy to have such a big onion harvest several weeks before the spring seeded onions will mature. We also transplanted our fall storage cabbage, and spread a lot of compost on top of some mowed cover cropped ridges. These ridges were seeded to many fall root crops: carrots, beets, rutabaga, gilfeather turnip, and watermelon radish. This is a new system for us to grow fall root vegetable crops and we are optimistic that it will yield a great fall harvest of delicious and healthy vegetables, with minimal need for weed control, and with strong resilience to both intense rainfall and periods of drought.

This week our family is lucky to be able to take a trip to the ocean and we are so thankful for the awesome Evening Song Farm team holding down all the responsibilities and moving parts while we are away.
